Rabb Emison

Rabb Emison, the last descendent in Knox County of a pioneer family which arrived in 1804, has died.

Ancestor Thomas Emison, who established a mill in Busseron Township was one of the small committee who selected the site for Indianapolis to be the State capital. In addition to operating a stage coach line he was a partner in commercial boat activity on the Wabash River and fought with William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe.  He established the family practice of service.

He was most proud that in the last 100 years his grandfather, James Wade Emison, his father, Ewing Emison and he have been active in preparation and lobbying legislation helpful to the community. In 1907 James Wade Emison prepared and obtained adoption of legislation that paid Vincennes University funds equal to the value of 15,000 acres in Gibson County that the United States Congress was deemed to have assigned to Vincennes University in 1816. The State had taken the funds. His efforts were successful and the university won the funds.  In 1947 his father, Ewing Emison, prepared and obtained adoption of legislation that began State support of Vincennes University which did not exist before 1947 but has existed ever since. In 1963 Rabb prepared and obtained adoption in both Indiana and Illinois authorizing a city in each state to combine in the operation of an airport in either state. In each person’s action the reward was satisfaction for service to others.

Rabb was well known for being a raconteur par excellence. He loved to tell stories (some of them many times!) to entertain those around him and make them laugh.  The columns he wrote for the Indiana State Bar Association’s journal, res gestae, were recently compiled into book form.  These columns entertained, enlightened and served as guidance to his contemporaries as well as the generations of lawyers who followed.

Putting people at ease was a special skill.  Dinner guests were often quizzed about their favorite movies, books and presidents and then asked to elaborate on why they had chosen those particular ones.  Laughter was very important to him and the family home often rang with it.  Conversations were never dull when Rabb was at the table.

Rabb served offices in the Indiana State Bar Association, being President in 1987.  During his term he caused action that led to the creation of a committee that acts to assist the employment and advancement of minority lawyers. The ISBA created the Rabb Emison Award granted to a lawyer who best served the goal of assistance to the minority lawyer. Rabb spoke at meetings of the diversity committee of the American Bar Association and was honored with an award for his activities relative to the minority lawyer.  He received alumni awards from Lincoln High School, DePauw University and Indiana University as well as two Sagamores of the Wabash, the YMCA’s Ray Beless Award and the Walter Davis award from Vincennes University.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was called in months later for 3 years active duty. He was called in again in 1952 for 18 months active duty. He was notified in 1962 to expect recall but was not recalled. He was never discharged from the Navy.

He is listed in four Who’s Who publications. Who’s Who in America, in The Midwest, in American Law and in The World.  He was also a private pilot with an instrument rating.  He flew 2500 hours through the United States, enjoying the company of his family and friends traveling to play some of the best golf courses in the world.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen, and daughters Susan Emison of Louisville, KY, and Anne Emison Wishard (Gordon) of Indianapolis.

In lieu of flowers, Rabb would like memorial contributions to be sent to Grouseland Foundation, 3 West Scott St, Vincennes, or online at www.grouselandfoundation.org for an endowment to sustain the mansion.

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 2, from 5 - 7 p.m.  The service will be on Friday, September 3, at 10:30 a.m.

Arrangements are being handled Goodwin Funeral Home in Vincennes, IN.
